Little storks of The Hague

If you remember my stork serie last month, you'll know that the stork is the symbol the Hague. I found yesterday in a pastry shop in the Reinkenstraat a very nice small paper box containing some small very buttery cookies, called the "littles storks of the Hague". This small pastry has been created by the Hessing family who happens to be very famous for having created and baked several bread and pastry specialties for the city!

Month theme : " When People Think of My City They Think of..."

Haagsche Hopjes!!!!!!

This candy exists for......215 years, and is still The Hague's very own sweet! Haagsche Hopjes are hard coffee flavored candies with the taste of coffee, packed in the original Rademaker's tin cans.

The hopje was named after the baron Hendrik Hop, whose doctor advised him not to drink coffee. He ordered his baker Theodorus van Haaren to invent a sweet with coffee flavouring. After some experimenting, van Haaren created a sweet made of coffee, caramel, cream and butter. The enthusiastic baron Hop was keen to let his guests try his 'Hopjes', which quickly gained popularity. A typical characteristic of the hopje is that it does not stick and that it does not go soft over time. The Hague has a museum called "Museum voor het Haagsche Hopje", which is dedicated to the hopje and its history.

Besides being a local speciality it has become a Dutch national candy.

Buy it here!!!!!!

Chinese breakfast?

Two months ago the first Chinese hotel opened in the chinese neighborhood in the centre. The 3-star Wahdo hotel has 20 rooms, is named after a Chinese city, and offers a Chinese roof garden that I still need to visit. Of course, Chinese breakfast is offered to the guests. If you want to find out what Chinese people eat for breakfast, have a look here! Enjoy it!!!!

Fancy a haring?

Typical Dutch!! Those stands outside the Binnenhof are not only for tourists (though as you can see on the picture some Japanese are having fun in making some photos of them). Many regular Dutch people enjoy having a "broodje haring" for lunch (one sweet herring with onion and cucumber in a piece of white bread).
