This is an old photograph that has been placed on the wall of a side street of the Keizerstraat in Scheveningen. It must have been placed in the last two weeks, as this was the first time I noticed it (when it measures approximately 3m*5m!). It pictures two traditionally dressed women in the style of fishermen's wives looking at sea when their husbands are sailing back. It probably recalls the symbol of Scheveningen I posted here.

Modern Penelope...
At the end of the Keizerstraat in Scheveningen stands a scultpure of a fisherman's wife looking at the horizon. She is waiting for her husband, away at sea, like Penelope. One says that waiting for a missing person is worse than knowing that this person has passed away.
FLowers were placed on the statue to celebrate its 25 years.

Keizerstraat
After showing many pictures of the beach around Scheveningen, I wanted to post a picture of the main shopping street of this neighbourhood of The Hague. It is the Keizerstraat (The street of the Emperor), the historical centre of this ex fishermen village, and the main way for The Hague residents to head for the beach as far back as the 17th century. It is named after Charles V, who was in the 16th century the emperor of the German Empire (Netherlands was then part of it). The church, dating back the 15th century has always been the central point of the street.
