Shocking!

If sometimes you may think it's nice to live on the waterside, forget it when it is abnormally hot and sunny and when everybody in the city and around has decided to enjoy a day out on the beach.....

The worst experience was to see all the garbage left on the beach by uncivilized Dutch people...it was hard for me to believe I was in the Netherlands. What do they think? That because the beach is cleaned every night it gives them the right to throw away cans and plastic bottles where they sit? It reminded me of El Rodadero beach in the Colombian city of Santa Marta; when I then asked locals why their beach was so dirty at the end of the day, they then answered that they were not bothered because that would give some work to all the poor people who would during the evening gather and then sell the garbage...... This is not the case in Holland, and I suggest the Council to stop cleaning the beaches for a week to see whether they would be a reaction in the papers!

Wow the picture makes me feel very uncomfortable for some reason.. It's probably because theres way too many people on that beach.. but the garbage makes it even worse

Honestly, I don't think I've seen that much littering even in less environmentally and socially aware countries. I remember once, in Rio de Janeiro, when we went for a walk on the beach. It was early in the morning and we saw a lot of cigarette buts, some pieces of what looked to be toilet paper and condoms all over a rather large area of that beach. This was many, many years ago. But what you show in that photo is certainly a lot more shocking to me.

You are right, it really is hard to believe that's Holland.

So sad.

You are so right, and thank you for saying it. There's litter all over this country, not just at the beach. I do think it has to do with a "it'll get cleaned" mentality. It is truly shameful for a culture that prides itself on "cleanliness" to be so lazy when it comes to litter!!! Good idea of having the city refrain from picking up.

I was appalled this weekend when we passed some parcs here too. This is not the way I was raised and i certainly tell my children to take their waste with them or put it in a bin. Actually all my friends act that way, but i jave to admit it is here and it is a disgrace.

I can assure you we did not stay longer than 15mns around on that beach as it was very disgusting (and our primary destination was the trampoline on the Boulevard for the kids, which of course was too busy.) And I agree with all of you, it is a disgrace, and I am waiting for the edition of tomorrow's Schevenigen paper to see whether anything was mentioned on the papers!

Sorry for not visiting your blogs this week, but I'm very busy with family visiting us. I'll catch up later in the week.

I got the same responds when I was in Guangzhou, China, and chided the shopkeeper for throwing garbage on the floor in the wholesales market. He said every hour, there would be a sweeper. If there's no garbage, then the sweeper would have nothing to do. So he would rather throw his food containers on the floor rather than into the bin next to him! Preposterous! But I guess some people just ain't civic-minded.
