Dirty canal

Here the bridge along the Hooftskade/Zuidwal canal in the Schilderswijk district of The Hague. Enlarge the photo and see how many plastic bottles are floating in the water....

This corner of the Hague represents a third of the city centre and was originally developed following strong demand in cheaper housing at the end of the XIX century (the population of the Hague grew between 1875 and 1900 from 100.000 to more than 200.000 inhabitants). Now, nearly 90% of the people leaving in this part are Turks, Moroccans or from Surinam and Dutch Antilles and this district is one of the poorest ones in the country...

If they litter the canal like this, the streets in that area must be quite a mess. I will never understand why people choose to litter (because it IS a choice). Do they do it because they are unhappy with the place they live in? Or because they are unhappy with themselves? In any case, does the Dutch government think that taking action against people for littering is too un-PC?

Hi Lezard,
We both are posting bridges in Holland , yu yesterday and I today, soon you can add the Polish people on this list, in rotterdam there are many of them living in narrow housing, too bad for them.

I just know from the "schilderswijk'in the Hague that it was (perhaps still is) always very cosy there, much happened on the streets, as a irl I liked that very very much! Than I suppose i liked other cultures too. :) The food even smelled btter than at my house in The Hague (in Scheveningen and Moerwijk) hahah!

Look at my blog I posted some real dutch views ,Dark winterskies, but nice to see anyhow, bye Joann
